Are you thinking about moving to La Crosse and want someone to give you the bottom line of what it's really like? In this episode of La Crosse Revealed, I’m going to give you the good, bad, and ugly of living in La Crosse. I’ll also share the top 3 reasons people love living here so you can decide if this area is right for you.

The Pros Of Living In La Crosse

The first pro of living in La Crosse is the highly-rated schools. La Crosse schools have over 6,600 students with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. According to Niche's ranking, its overall grade is an A- in 2021. La Crosse School District also rated high in Wisconsin for Best Places To Teach, Best School District For Athletes, and Most Diverse School District In Wisconsin.

Another pro of living in La Crosse is the beautiful bluffs, the Mississippi River, and multiple trail systems for hiking, biking, running, and walking. This city features unique bridges, breathtaking landscapes, legendary parks, and a historic downtown with a variety of places to eat and grab a cold beer. The La Crosse region also has a lot of outstanding sights to enjoy, with different festivals throughout the year. It’s the perfect spot for outdoor recreation, with plenty of opportunity for kayaking, fishing, canoeing, and cruising the Mississippi. You can also enjoy some of the best downhill and cross-country skiing in the region.

The third pro is that, overall, the people in the community are very friendly. You will find that most La Crosse residents are very kind and always willing to lend a helping hand.

The Cons Of Living In La Crosse

While La Crosse has plenty of pros, there are some cons to living here. Like every city, not everything is perfect. If you’re serious about living here, it’s important to know what to expect.

Did you know that La Crosse has very cold winters? Although spring, summer, and fall are almost perfect, the winters are freezing, dry, and windy. The cold season usually lasts about three to four months with an average daily high of below 38 degrees. Now and then, we'll get a few days that are super cold with temperatures dipping down into the negatives.

If you can deal with the cold winters, maybe you won't mind some of the poorly maintained roads and high property taxes. You'd like to think that, with high property taxes, we would have better-maintained roads. The truth is that some of the roads in La Crosse are just plain crap. You'll be lucky to make it through a year without needing your car fixed after hitting some of those big potholes.
