We’ll look at everything from the cost of housing to the cost of gas so you know exactly what to expect. 


Housing Costs

First, let's talk about the obvious: the cost of housing. One of the first things you'll need to decide is if it's better to buy or rent here in La Crosse. Next, what kind of housing do you need? Are you single or do you have a family? Based on your criteria, the prices of housing vary.

In 2021, the median sale price on single-family homes in La Crosse sold for roughly $186,000. If you're looking to rent in the area, you can plan on spending anywhere from about $600 a month on a one-bedroom to around $1,400 or higher on a four-bedroom. 46% of the people in La Crosse own a home and 54% of the people rent a home. 

Property taxes in our area vary depending on what township you live in versus living in the city of La Crosse. It’s also based on the overall size of the home, the age of the home, and what improvements you have done. The yearly median tax in La Crosse County is, on an average, 1.96% of the home's value.

But let's go over some other costs of living right here in La Crosse. The annual state income tax here ranges from 3.54% to 7.65%, which is dependent on income levels and filing status. The gas here averages around $2.79 per gallon. Additionally, the annual car sticker cost is $85.

Our sales tax is 5.5%. According to Sperling’s Best Places—with the number 100 representing the national average—La Crosse scored at 4.4. for overall cost of living. This means the cost to live an average lifestyle in La Crosse is substantially less expensive than the national average.
